"when i get hungry enough, then killing and falling are dancing too"

the khan's army did not need a little girl who could dance. the khan's army needed an able bodied man who could take orders and later teach others to do the same. her family is not exceptional. her family sends the khan what he needs.

she takes great care in picking her horse before setting off to join the rest of the conscripted men. they treat her like a man like any other, and she is fine with that. she knows what she is, who she is. while she is performing an identity, she is still the girl who has a mother and father who rely on her, a peaceful home, and siblings who await her return. she has a place here for now, but she knows where she truly belongs. even as she deceives her comrades, she will not deceive herself.

mulan rises through the ranks as the war drags on, attaining promotion after promotion as she defends her homeland. it is a war story like any other, and mulan intends for it to stay that way. her country did not need any upstarts. the country needed stability and order. they needed citizens, not heroes.

she returns a hero, but she retires a civilian. the khan offers rewards on par with her amount of service, but she refuses them all. she has not deceived herself into believing herself a magistrate. mulan has always understood where she belongs, and she practically breathes a sigh of relief when she hurries home on a strong horse. mulan returns as the dutiful daughter that she has always been.

[attr="class","redheading"]PERSONALITY
humble - ultimately her ballad is not a story about a warrior woman out to prove her worth, but a patriot who was reared on the countryside. she accepted no reward for her decade of service in the military and finished her story with little flourish. if her story is remembered and retold, then that is due to the mothers who wished for their daughters to become dependable citizens (heroism is secondary) who do not shirk their duty.

patriotic - it probably would have been far easier to avoid the military draft, but mulan always knew that the hard road is the only road that she would travel. she managed to defend her home, so it is probably fitting that she should be allowed to return to it.

practical - unhindered by pride, she always strove to do best by her army. a minister's life didn't seem real to her either, as she always knew that she is a commoner woman at heart. her down to earth attitude also helps her adapt to whatever this era throws her way.

cunning - a prerequisite for anyone looking to lead an army, really. that, and you don't fool your own men into thinking that you're a woman for twelve years without having something in that head. though mulan might just blame the people who don't look hard enough.

unambitious - this isn't the disney version, yo. mulan set out to fulfil a citizen's draft and she had no need for a reward. there wasn't anything to prove, and she returned home as a daughter and sister.

laid-back - she's had a pretty good life, and it's hard for her to retain some sense of urgency sometimes. nothing ever really happened in her home village, after all. the grail war is gonna change that pretty fast.

[attr="class","blackheading"]COMBAT
  • for the most part, mulan is a defensive tank that can take hits that aren't like EX tier. she can even rescue allies with her noble phantasm and insane luck stat. she's not exactly anything to write home about in terms of offensive abilities, but she's the general of an army, not a legendary warlord. her luck will only go so far and can be overcome by sheer power, but mulan will have that pinch of fortune whenever she really needs it.

    ▬ ▬ D
  • [attr="class","stat"]AGILITY
    ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ B

  • [attr="class","stat"]LUCK
    ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ A+
  • [attr="class","stat"]NOBLE PHANTASM
    ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ B
    Little Brother - Steed of the Four Directions. Her constant companion while at war, Mulan bought a war horse the day she left home. It makes a conspicuous familiar, but Little Brother is as intelligent as any man and far fiercer in battle. He can traverse all of China in a single night, and he moves so fast over the ground he appears to be flying. Before Mulan can be slain, Little Brother must be slain. Even without Little Brother physically present, all wounds she sustains are taken by him first. He is, in effect, a bonus health bar.
  • [attr="class","stat"]NOBLE PHANTASM
    ▬ ▬ D
    Ten Thousand Mile Camel - The Journey Home. A camel, unsuited for camel but strangely blessed. Given to Mulan to take her home after the war, anyone traveling atop the camel cannot be harmed and will travel directly to the nearest place of safety, preferably a place that passes as a suitable home.
  • [attr="class","stat"]NOBLE PHANTASM
    ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ B
    Gown of War - Daughter of China. Her father's armor, when Mulan wears her armor, she cannot be identified as a woman in the slightest: she can only be seen as a warrior as strong as a hundred thousand men. As long as she is on the defensive--defending her master, her country, or her family--Mulan's armor protects her from all attacks, including noble phantasms A rank and below. This only works if she's actively defending something she cares about and is honor-bound to defend.
  • [attr="class","stat"]RIDING
    ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ ▬ A
    She's a Rider. She's good at riding things.
  • [attr="class","stat"]BRAVERY
    ▬ ▬ ▬ C
    All heroes are brave, but not many are brave like Mulan. She is immune to all mental effects that would interfere with her combat ability. In battle, nothing can distract her.
  • [attr="class","stat"]EYE OF THE MIND (TRUE)
    ▬ ▬ ▬ C
    Hundreds of generals and warriors have died in combat in China's history, but Mulan survived. After twelve years of warfare, she can sense danger. Her instincts and luck will guide her away from danger and direct her towards crushing blows.
  • [attr="class","stat"]DISGUISE
    ▬ ▬ ▬ C
    Mulan can appear to be either gender; this effect is so potent as to be magical. Nothing can pierce that disguise. She can also disguise herself as other people or made-up people, but such disguises aren't as foolproof. However, at a glance, she is very convincing. Her disguises seem to be more effective on those with high social status.
